What is bounce rate?
Bounce rate is a percentage metric that measures the proportion of visitors who leave a website relatively quickly after landing on a particular page. After clicking on a link, they remain on the page for a short time, do not browse the site further, and return to the search results. Bounce rate is used to measure the effectiveness of a website. It indicates whether visitors found what they were looking for on the site and what overall impression it made. If they leave quickly, it means that the site did not arouse positive feelings and did not meet their expectations.
A high bounce rate indicates that the site is unattractive and does not contain valuable content. Users quickly leave it. A low bounce rate, on the other hand, shows that users continue to interact with the site after viewing the first page. This indicates a positive experience.
Naturally, we strive for the lowest possible bounce rate.
What level of bounce rate is acceptable?
What’s a good bounce rate? Well, it depends. Factors like your industry and website goals can influence what’s considered a normal bounce rate. But as a general rule:
Below 40% - it's considered good;
between 40% and 60% - it's average and a signal for optimization;
above 60% - it indicates serious problems with content quality and site performance, requiring optimization and significant changes.
How to lower the bounce rate of your website?
Luckily, bounce rate is something we can control. It depends on how good our content is and how easy our site is to use. So, if our bounce rate is too high, we can fix it. How? Let’s find out!
Improve content quality. Deliver engaging and high-quality content to increase dwell time.
Facilitate navigation. Ensure the website is clear and easy to navigate to find what visitors are looking for.
Optimize loading time. Users are impatient and will leave the site after just 3 seconds if it hasn't loaded.
Utilize attractive interactive elements. Use image galleries, videos, applications, tools, slides, quizzes - anything to engage users and encourage them to stay longer.
Utilize internal linking. Consistent links to other subpages will encourage users to explore the entire site.
Optimize the site for mobile devices. Our website should be accessible on all types of devices (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.).
How to measure bounce rate?
You can measure the level of bounce rate using various professional tools, such as Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Hotjar, Crazy Egg.
Another important factor is the aforementioned
dwell time - the time spent on the site. The higher it is, the better it speaks of our website.
