Instagram shadowban: What is it and what causes it?

Social media platforms, including Instagram, offer an excellent opportunity to promote your brand, reach your target audience with your products and services, and increase consumer awareness. However, you might experience a sudden drop in engagement with your content. This doesn't necessarily mean your audience has lost interest; it could be a sign that your account has been shadowbanned.

What is a shadowban? How can you identify it? And is there a way to reverse it? In this article, we will answer these questions and provide you with all the essential information about shadowbans, a common challenge faced by social media users. We encourage you to read on.

What is a shadowban?

A shadowban is a situation where a social media platform, such as Instagram, limits the visibility of your profile and content without notifying you. Posts, comments, stories, and other activities become less visible to other users, negatively impacting your account's reach and audience engagement.

The most challenging aspect of a shadowban is that Instagram does not provide any notification about its imposition. You will only notice this after some time, by observing a decline in your metrics. Additionally, the exact reasons for a shadowban are often unclear, and there can be numerous factors contributing to it, as we will discuss shortly.

Shadowban symptoms

Using a medical analogy, a shadowban on Instagram is akin to a common cold or even the flu for an account. The account doesn't feel quite right, and based on certain symptoms, we can confidently conclude that it has been hit with a hidden block. What are these symptoms?

  • A drop in reach - fewer people are seeing our posts, even though we used to have a pretty good reach.
  • Decreased user engagement - the number of likes, comments, and new followers has significantly decreased. We used to have tens, even hundreds of likes, but now we barely get a dozen.
  • Issues with hashtags - our posts are not appearing in search results for selected hashtags (e.g., #DigitalMarketing).
  • Difficulty reaching new followers - new users who haven't visited our profile before are having trouble finding it.
  • Restrictions on sending direct messages - we may have problems sending messages to other users.
  • Account report - someone may have reported our account or post due to misleading, controversial, or shocking content. If you want to publish such content, please warn users appropriately beforehand.

  • Shadowban - can you get rid of it? How?

Yes, in many cases, it is possible to recover from a shadowban. However, there is no single, magical solution that works for everyone. Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Analyzing the causes - let's consider what might have caused the shadowban. It could be a violation of Instagram's terms of service, excessive use of hashtags, buying followers or likes, or a sudden surge in activity. If you've rapidly increased your followers, likes, or comments, Instagram might flag your account as suspicious. Copyright infringement, such as copying other users' content or using images without permission, can also lead to limited visibility.
  • Taking a break - sometimes, a short break from Instagram can help.
  • Improving content quality - focus on creating valuable and original content that engages your audience. Perhaps your previous posts were of lower quality?
  • Maintaining consistency - consistency is key. Post regularly, but don't overdo it to avoid spamming.
  • Using relevant hashtags - choose popular hashtags that are relevant to your niche and industry. Avoid spamming with irrelevant hashtags.
  • Engaging with others - comment on other users' posts, respond to comments on your posts, and build new connections.
  • Avoiding bots - do not use bots or other automation tools for Instagram.
  • Reporting the issue - if you believe you've been unfairly shadowbanned, report the issue to Instagram.

  • How long does a shadowban last?

The duration of a shadowban varies and depends on several factors, such as the severity of the rule violation and the frequency of such actions. It can last from a few days to several weeks, or even months. Instagram, of course, does not disclose the duration of such a block, nor does it notify anyone when imposing a shadowban. However, there are no known cases of permanent shadowbans.

Unfortunately, Instagram does not provide a direct way to appeal a shadowban decision (since it also does not inform users about such an imposition). However, we can try to contact Instagram's support and explain the situation.

    Summing up Instagram and shadowbans…

A shadowban is a frustrating experience for any Instagram user. Although it's not always easy to detect or remove, it's worth taking steps to improve your profile's situation. Remember, consistently creating valuable content and adhering to Instagram's guidelines is key to succeeding on this platform.
