Ranking factors: How do they influence a website’s ranking?

Understanding ranking factors allows SEO professionals to influence the visibility of websites. In this article, we will present these factors and consider how to optimize them to improve a website's ranking.

What are ranking factors?

Ranking factors are variables that influence how high a given page will rank in search results. They are divided into two main types: on-site and off-site. Let's take a closer look at each.

On-page ranking factors

➡️ On-page ranking factors (also known as on-site) are ranking factors directly related to a specific webpage. These include:

  • Keywords - these are the terms that you are optimizing your page for. They should answer user queries and appear in the content, headings, meta data, and image alt attributes.
  • Content quality - optimal content is valuable, unique, and high-quality. It fulfills the needs of the audience. Through keywords, it helps search engines rank the page.
  • Structure - the page should be clear and easy to navigate. Content is organized by importance using headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.). The page should have logical internal linking. This improves navigation for both users and search engine bots.
  • Page speed - directly impacts user experience (UX). A faster-loading page leads to better user satisfaction.
  • Geolocation - data on the page related to its geographic location and local user queries.
  • SSL certificate - ensures the security of the website and can positively influence search engine rankings.

  • Off-page ranking factors

➡️ Off-page ranking factors (also known as off-site) are elements that do not directly pertain to a specific webpage. They are not tied to the page or its content as outlined in the previous paragraph. Instead, they relate to the website's reputation on the internet. Notable off-page factors include:

  • Backlinks - these are links from other websites that point to your site. They are particularly valuable when they come from reputable and authoritative sites.
  • Reviews and ratings - while generally out of direct control, these significantly impact a website's visibility. Positive reviews from users increase a site's visibility. Encouraging users to leave reviews, whether textual or in the form of star ratings, is beneficial. Platforms like Google Reviews offer both options.
  • Social media - to gain online visibility, a website or company should invest in social media. This significantly increases the potential for views and visits to the site. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and X (Twitter) are particularly useful.
  • Other mentions - these include discussions on forums, chats, messaging apps, and mentions in video content by influencers.
  • Optimizing ranking factors

To achieve higher rankings, ranking factors must be optimized. Regardless of whether you're a small business or a large corporation, whether you run a website about healthy eating or a medical office, ranking factors are universal variables that, when studied and improved, can actively increase a website's visibility. Let's now move on to the methods for optimizing ranking factors. We can list the most important ones:

    1. Keyword research - identifying the key phrases that users search for and optimizing your website for those terms. Tools like Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs can be very helpful.
    2. Creating valuable content - regularly publishing content based on keywords. It's worth looking into the concept of "Evergreen Content" - content that is timeless and has a lasting impact on a site's ranking and authority.
    3. Website optimization - meta tags, image descriptions (alt attributes), and page loading speed.
    4. Acquiring quality backlinks - make an effort to acquire high-quality backlinks from reputable websites. Consider reaching out to these websites directly to initiate collaborations.
    5. Building online presence - increase user awareness of your website and company through online activities. Social media is an ideal place for this. Some companies like to use unconventional methods such as LOL content - funny content that grabs attention and engages the community. This type of content is part of a larger category known as viral marketing, which spreads rapidly and is highly contagious. Overall, building an online presence contributes to better brand awareness.
    6. Regularly monitoring results and making improvements - continuously monitor your results and make necessary adjustments.
A skilled SEO specialist knows that optimizing both on-page and off-page ranking factors will benefit a website by improving its search engine rankings. These higher rankings, in turn, lead to better conversions, such as when users make purchase decisions. Building a strong website position is not an easy process, but it is certainly worth the time and effort!
