What is Web Usability and what does it include?
Web Usability refers to the ease with which users can navigate a website. It relates to its functionality, the options it offers, and the clarity in presenting information and fulfilling the purposes for which it is visited. A well-designed website is clear, consistent, and easy to use. It provides a positive user experience and encourages repeat visits.
Web Usability focuses on four key elements. In other words, the concept is based on four strong pillars. Our website should optimize these to be useful, helpful, and stable. These pillars are:
- Navigation - the website should have a clear and consistent navigation system that allows users to quickly find the information they need. Moving around the site should be effortless.
- Readability - 1) Readable text and layout - the text on the site should be easy to read, and the layout should be designed to help users process information easily. Bolding can be a useful tool for highlighting important information. Color choices also play a significant role. For more information, read our article: Marketing and Colors: How to Choose the Right Colors for Your Website. 2) Bolding - using bold text can help draw attention to important keywords or phrases, making it easier for users to scan the page and find the information they need. 3) Color scheme - the colors used on a website can have a significant impact on how users perceive the content. Choosing the right color scheme can help create a certain mood or atmosphere.
- Accessibility - the website should be accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities or devices. This means adhering to accessibility standards. Another term for this is responsiveness, which refers to the ability of a website to adapt to different devices (computers, smartphones, tablets). Google's Mobile-First Index algorithm update pays close attention to website responsiveness.
- Loading speed - the website should load quickly to avoid frustrating users and preventing them from continuing to use it. Most users will leave a site if it doesn't load within about 3 seconds. We have a more detailed article on optimizing website loading speed: Page loading speed - How to improve it?
Generally speaking, website usability plays a very important role in user experience, or UX. UX defines the impressions our users have while using the site. This includes aspects such as usability, but also aesthetics and a consistent interface. The user interface, or UI, is a separate concept that needs to be focused on when designing a cohesive website. It includes all the elements necessary for proper communication between the user and the site, such as buttons, sliders, messages, and alerts. A well-designed User Interface allows for the optimization of User Experience, which in turn leads to the benefits described below.
What are the benefits of a usable website?
As we mentioned earlier, websites are primarily created for users, so they should focus on usability and providing value. Of course, they must also meet the requirements and guidelines of search engines, but they should not be created solely to satisfy specific algorithms. If a website is useful and its users have a positive experience with its aspects and functionality, it gives us the following benefits:
Increased user satisfaction and brand loyalty,
higher conversion rates and sales,
lower bounce rates and longer dwell time,
improved brand image and user trust,
better brand awareness.
High website usability contributes to a better position in search results. Search engine algorithms consider user factors such as time spent on the site and bounce rate, as well as content quality. Optimizing website usability can therefore indirectly affect its SEO by increasing user engagement and improving user metrics.
How to improve your website's usability
Website usability is made up of elements that we, as the creators of that site, have influence over and can optimize. Therefore, it is worth spending some time and effort to improve the web usability of your site. Below we indicate several actions that are recommended to be taken.
Conduct user research and behavior analysis to understand their needs and expectations of the site.
Apply the principle of simplicity and clarity in designing the interface and navigation.
Optimize the loading speed of the page by optimizing images, code, and hosting. Tips for optimizing loading speed are provided in our article on this topic.
Ensure accessibility of the site for people with different abilities, for example by providing alternative descriptions (ALT attributes) for images for visually impaired people. These attributes are also helpful for search engine algorithms, as we can place valuable keywords there for which we are positioning the site.
Regularly monitor and analyze user metrics such as bounce rate, time spent on site to identify areas that need improvement. In the speed testing of the site, reports from the free Google PageSpeed Insights tool will be invaluable.
Finally, we present several criteria by which we can assess the level of usability of a website. They were created by Jakob Nielsen, the author of the book
Designing Web Usability: The Practice of Simplicity. Jakob is a specialist in website usability who has been working in this field since the 1990s.
Jakob Nielsen’s criteria for evaluating Website Usability
Satisfaction - this refers to whether using the website is enjoyable.
Memorability - this measures whether the website is memorable; does it stand out in some way? And most importantly, can a user easily navigate the site after a long absence?
Learnability - this determines how quickly a user can learn to use the site on their first visit.
Errors - this refers to potential errors that may occur while using the site. That's why regular testing is so important. It's worth trying to go through a process yourself to see if it works correctly. Proofreading written content works on a similar principle - before publishing, we read it ourselves to check for errors.
Efficiency - this determines the degree to which users who have already interacted with the site can quickly navigate it.
Summary
In summary, website usability is a crucial aspect that has a huge impact on the user experience. Without usability and value, a website is useless to the user, who will quickly leave, sending a negative signal to search engine algorithms. These are likely to penalize the site with low rankings in search results. Therefore, it is worth optimizing the site and providing usability to first satisfy users and, secondly, enjoy the recognition of search engine robots.
